Frequently Asked Questions

Vegan Leather

Q: Vegans and leather, what is a solution for them?
A: Vegan is “a person who does not eat or use animal products”, so it is not just their diet which is vegan. Veganism is a way of life, in which no animal products are used and this includes genuine leather. Vegans, however, can wear vegan leather which strictly avoids the usage of animal products in the manufacturing process.

Q: Why should I use vegan leather?
A: Even if you are not vegan, you should use vegan leather. Eating animals causes the slaughter of cows, but genuine leather is what makes the slaughtering of cows and other animals profitable. Without the demand for genuine leather, there would not be more than a billion animals killed every year. The production process of genuine leather is among the cruelest; as it involves the cutting of tails and horns without painkillers, skinning and boiling animals while alive. By using vegan leather, you will put a stop to these cruel acts, while having the same look with even better material. Vegan leather is not only cruelty-free, animal-friendly and eco-friendly; but also is waterproof, odorless and biodegradable.

Q: What is vegan leather?
A: Vegan leather is simply an alternative to genuine leather, which has the same look but does not use any animal products.

Q: What is great about PU vegan leather?
A: PU vegan leather has the least environmental emissions from other types of plastic and is considered eco-friendly. PU material is also more biodegradable than genuine leather. Genuine leather is not biodegradable because of the tanning process, which uses a range of toxic chemicals. Vegan leather is also the most breathable and does not absorb as much heat as genuine leather. PU leather does not have the unwanted odor of genuine leather. The odor of genuine leather smells like animal flesh. PU leather is also waterproof, as well as being long-lasting.

Q: What is vegan leather material/fabric?
A: The majority of vegan leathers are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyurethane (PU), which are types of plastic. PVC is very toxic for the environment, and the emissions can even cause death for humans as they cause cancer. PU however, has significantly fewer environmental emissions, which makes it eco-friendly. Although PU leather is more expensive to produce, it is also more biodegradable. The biodegradability of PU is higher than both PVC and genuine leather by far. Xerxes Leather only produces PU leather, for the environment, humans, and animals. The other types of vegan leather material also include cork/kelp.

Q: Is synthetic leather vegan?
A: Yes. Synthetic leather is also vegan because it does not use any animal products.

Q: Is vegan leather real leather?
A: No. Real leather or more commonly known, genuine leather uses animal products and vegan leather does not use animal products. Both real/genuine leather and vegan leather share the same look.

Q: What is faux leather?
A: Alternatives to genuine leather have many different names; faux leather, synthetic leather, and vegan leather. Although, faux leather typically refers to leather made from plastic.

Q: What is faux leather vs genuine leather?
A: There is just one similarity between faux leather and genuine leather; they both look the same. There are many differences between faux leather and genuine leather. Faux leather is better for the environment if made from PU material, as there are less environmental emissions in the production process than genuine leather. Faux leather is more biodegradable than genuine leather is made from PU material. Faux leather does not have an odor, genuine leather has an unwanted animal flesh odor. Faux leather is waterproof, genuine leather will be unusable after few contacts with water. Faux leather does not involve the violent slaughtering and skinning to animals, genuine leather is utterly involved severe cruelty to animals; ranging from skinning and boiling while the animal is still alive, or without the use of painkiller
